What does a library look like when a town turns down an expansion and fixes the building it already has? Westborough finds out at 55 West Main Street in the first week of November, when the renovated building reopens with the same outer walls, the same footprint, and a very different interior.
The Westborough Public Library closed its temporary branch at 1500 Union Street at 5:00 p.m. on September 23 and has been closed since then while staff move back downtown. According to Patch, the library is expected to reopen at 55 West Main during the first week of November. The library has said it will announce the exact date once it is confirmed. As of this writing, it has not posted a day or a ribbon-cutting.
The building's history explains most of what you'll see when the doors open.
The Library Westborough Didn't Build
The town started pursuing a state construction grant in 2012. Over the following years, Westborough won a $9.4 million grant toward a major renovation and expansion. In 2022, Town Meeting voted against that project, which would have significantly enlarged the building at an estimated cost of about $37 million.
The Library Building Committee met again in January 2023 with a narrower goal: fix the building's immediate and long-term problems without enlarging its footprint. Those problems were serious. The library had put off major maintenance for more than a decade while it waited on an expansion vote, and by 2023 its roof, HVAC, electrical, and network systems were all at or past the end of their service lives.
| 2022 expansion proposal | Repair project now finishing | |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated cost | About $37 million | Projected total of about $13.9 million |
| State grant | $9.4 million MBLC award | Not part of this project |
| Footprint | Significantly expanded | No increase |
| Town Meeting outcome | Rejected in 2022 | Construction funded March 22, 2025 |
At the Annual Town Meeting on March 22, 2025, voters approved the construction phase on a final motion of $12,303,229. It passed 551 to 63, clearing the required two-thirds majority. Two earlier Town Meeting votes had already covered schematic design and design development: $360,459 in 2023 and about $1.2 million in 2024. The library has said the $9.4 million state grant belonged to the rejected proposal, not this one, and that the Westborough Library Foundation committed to raising $1 million toward the repair.
Lamoureux Pagano Associates Architects designed the work, with Vertex as owner's project manager. The architects describe the existing library as a 20,000-square-foot building. Seaver Construction was the general contractor.
With no added square footage, every new space inside had to be carved from an existing one.
Every New Room Came From an Old One
In its September 2026 update, the library listed the spaces patrons will find on reopening.
- A new Teen Space, set apart from the library's quieter areas
- A rebuilt Children's Room with a new playscape. The library called this room the one that "has undergone the most dramatic transformation"
- Study pods and soft seating, with the comfortable chairs placed in the historic front rooms
- Small meeting rooms the public can reserve
- An updated meeting room with new technology, which the library expects to make it much more flexible for community use
- Five public restrooms, three of them on the main level
- Bottle-filling stations on every floor
None of these rooms is new construction. Each one fits inside walls that were already standing in 2022, so the Teen Space, the study pods, and the bookable rooms all exist because other space was reorganized around them. The restroom count matters for the same reason: the library's FAQ named adequate restrooms and ADA compliance as core goals of the repair.
Much of the budget went into work patrons won't see. The library lists a new roof, HVAC system, fire suppression system, security system, and updated electrical wiring among the most significant improvements. Those are the same systems the 2023 FAQ described as failing.
What the Repair Restored
Since the building couldn't expand, the project also put money into the historic features already there.
All of the original 1908 windows have been restored and put back. Olde Bostonian handled the window restoration. Restored skylights are back in place on the main and third floors. That includes the skylight over the circulation area, which a previous renovation had uncovered. In the library's own update, staff wrote that these historic features "bring an incredible amount of light and character back into the building."
The front entrance also got the original treatment. The original front doors were reinstalled, now painted blue. The library's project FAQ says it used a variance for the front entrance, which saved about $500,000.
The exterior has changed too. New sidewalks and walkways are in, and the landscaping features a Black Tupelo tree along with other plants native to New England. The exterior lights in place as of September were temporary stand-ins while the proper historic fixtures, which are on backorder, arrive. Depending on delivery, the lamps out front on opening week may not be the final ones.
"Of all the changes throughout the building, this may be the area that has undergone the most dramatic transformation."

Getting There on Opening Week
Keeping the footprint the same also kept the site the same, and that affects how you arrive. The library has said the repair adds no new parking. It instead points to shared use of the neighboring church lot when that lot is available. On a busy first week, walking from elsewhere downtown or allowing extra time to park will likely be easier than counting on a space right next to the building.
A few more details for the first visit:
- Returns. A new book drop is going in just to the left of the Parkman Street entrance, so you can return items when the library is closed.
- Until the doors open. Your Westborough library card works at other C/W MARS libraries for as long as the building stays closed.
- Hours. The library's hours page still shows the temporary Union Street address and hours, so check the homepage for any updated schedule before you go.
- Programs. The November calendar lists Cozy Club on Tuesday, November 17, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and Board Game Afternoon on Saturday, November 28, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. Neither requires registration. Both entries still name the closed Union Street site as the venue, so confirm the location closer to the date.
The best place to watch for the reopening day is the library's moving-home page, which has tracked each step since September. Community Advocate has also reported that the official date will be announced once it is confirmed.
Same Week, Same Downtown
Other things are going on around the reopening. The town's Economic Development Committee lists Main Street Trick or Treat for October 27 in its Autumn 2026 newsletter. On November 1, the Westborough Community Land Trust and the Forbush Bird Club are running a morning walk, "Birding In and Around Westborough and Northborough," from 7:30 to 11 a.m., led by Nick Paulson. Pre-registration is required. The land trust's Gilmore Pond Sensory Trail had its public grand opening on October 4. It's an all-persons trail with accessible route features and audio stations about local history and nature.
The library's first week back on West Main lands in the middle of all this. The last time patrons walked into 55 West Main, the 1908 windows and the skylights had not yet been restored.
